ABOUT SHERBROOKE U3A
Sherbrooke U3A began on the 12th September 2007.
A Public Meeting was held at the Tecoma Uniting Church, where expressions
of interest were canvassed. The meeting was opened by Caroline Richards, Eucalypt Co-ordinator,
on behalf of the Steering Committee.
Cr. Samantha Dunn, Peter Smith representing Jason Wood Federal MP for Latrobe and Ruth Hawley,
Vice-President U3A Network -Victoria were invited guests and spoke of their interest in the forming of
a U3A in the Upwey - Tecoma - Belgrave area.
60+ people attended the meeting and from this group 35 membership applications were taken and a committee was formed.
A class programme was organised and Sherbrooke U3A took flight!
Initially classes were held at local halls. The Shire of Yarra Ranges was approached as to a suitable site for an office.
Eventually a vacant room, in the Upwey Senior Community hall, was made available with the consent of the Upwey Senior Citizens.
A Working Bee of Sherbrooke U3A members was organised to clear out the room (previously used as a junk room) it was cleaned and painted.
New floor lining and some donated carpet was laid. Grant money from the Yarra Ranges Council and the Belgrave branch of
the Bendigo Bank enabled office equipment to be purchased. Power was installed and the office opened for business in April 2008.
Some classes are held at the Upwey Senior Community Hall, and various other local halls accommodate the remaining classes.,
Sherbrooke U3A acknowledges the ongoing
support of the Shire of Yarra Ranges & the Bank of Bendigo, Belgrave Branch.
